Life On A Quarter Acre

Philanthus gibbosus (Hump-backed Beewolf)

This is the most common species of bee-hunting wasp (beewolf) in North America. They nest in the ground, usually in sandy soil, providing paralyzed bees and wasps to their larvae. Their prey include sweat bees (Halictidae), masked bees (Hylaeus sp.) and member of the family Andrenidae. They also take aphid wasps (Pemphredon sp.).

They may nest in the yard, though, since I have put a cubic yard or so of sand in the yard to encourage ground nesting bees and wasps. So far, though, I haven't seen any nest activity or seen any with prey.
